‘First of all, just keep as still as you can,’ advised Harris. ‘We don’t want to do anything hasty. I need to think through our options.’

Clara didn’t dare move a muscle or nod her head but her eyes were locked on Harris and he knew she had heard him and understood.

Bindi looked around her at what natural tools were available to them that might be of some use. They had made their way down from a high tableland into a rocky gorge which overlooked a creek. Maybe their best bet was to get some kind of rope or long tree branch to attach to Clara.

‘What do you think we should do?’ Bindi asked Harris.

The teenager had been looking around at their surroundings trying to figure out what to do.

‘I don’t have any rope with me but we could use one of the horses’ reins or stirrup straps as rope. I’m scared to use a branch in case the wood isn’t strong enough to hold Clara’s weight.’

Bindi nodded. ‘Do you want me to go back up and get them?’

Harris shook his head. ‘I’ll do it. I’ll be quicker and I’d hate to have you fall as well because you were hurrying.’ He got to his feet. ‘I’ll be as fast as I can.’

Bindi watched as Harris climbed nimbly up the rock surface. She desperately tried to think of some other way of helping Clara. What if at any moment the rock gave way and caused the rest of the loose particles on the shelf to fall? She shuddered at the thought and tried to give Clara a big encouraging smile.

‘Hang in there, Clara. We’ll get you out of here in a jiffy,’ Bindi said.

Clara met her eyes. Bindi realised that this tough and strong country girl was very scared. She also noticed from the corner of her eye that the dingo Clara had been tracking was down by the creek bed. It was watching them.

After what seemed like hours but was only about 20 minutes, Harris returned. He was carrying a couple of pairs of reins which he had tied together to make a long leather rope.

‘Pull this end against me just to test how strong it is.’ He handed one end to Bindi.

They each pulled on the leather against each other as hard as they could. It held fast.

Harris approached Clara as closely as he dared. It was important that he stayed on solid ground and didn’t go near the loose and uneven surface.

‘I’m going to gently throw one end of this rein to you and then I’m going to pull you up,’ he explained to her.

Bindi held her breath as Harris carefully threw the end of the leather strap towards Clara. It landed near her right hand and she very slowly inched her hand towards the strap until she was clutching it.

‘Grab it with both hands,’ called Bindi.

Once it looked as if Clara had a good grip on her end, Harris got into position.

‘Bindi, I’ll need your help to pull this end, just in case,’ Harris instructed.
